Deism - for the unsatisfied seekerpublic - created 10/23/03 |

David Hume's "Treatise of Human Nature"; Jean Jacques Rousseau's "Social Contract", Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations"; Voltaire who said: "In general, the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one class of citizens to give to the other." (from Dictionnaire Philosophique, 1764); and of course Freemasonry.
Also, many of our founding fathers were Deist?s, not Christian?s. One small related site: www.sullivan-county.com/deism.htm. Einstein could be identified as a Deist. Deist's don't deny "God" as "God" is an infinite concept. They believe "God" was once here (big bang or bearded white man it really makes no difference). Another way to look at it is that ?Matter? is the here and now and "God" is the motion or space-time envelope (past and future), Ying and Yang, etc. This fits Kant's view too which was basically that you cannot prove or disprove some things; so get on with living your life before it?s gone. At least our founders avoided getting hung and burned at the stake for not believing in "God"; some of those very smart French Enlightenment guys missed that point.
I have debated these things for years until I realized I was trapped in a circle. Like Socrates and Euthyphro; we will all perish in the same circle. As we get older, the passion to resolve these questions dissipates; (or you kill yourself or someone else or someone kills you) :) So, if you want something to believe in, turn off the TV, try Deism, try History, try Logic, and try smiling at everyone you meet.
